There is some evidence that supplemental L-glutamine has a beneficial effect on gastrointestinal health, can promote wound healing, in preserving immune health, and can help restore plasma glutamine levels lost following episodes of physical stress, including extreme exhaustive exercise.
Skeletal muscle has the highest content of L-glutamine intracellularly, with as much as 60 percent of total L-glutamine stores and is largely the depot and exporter of L-glutamine to the rest of the body. Intense exercise can also adversely lower the blood level of glutamine and, if intense training is repeated without adequate recovery, then the level can remain low.
